Today we drove to downtown San Diego, specifically to Balboa Park. It is
the nation’s largest cultural park, home to 15 major museums,
performing arts venues, beautiful gardens, and a zoo. The Spanish
Renaissance style buildings you will see in our pictures were built for
the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition and are the centerpiece of
the 1200 acre park.
We spent the whole day in the park touring
some of the museums and gardens. Just as entertaining was the passing
parade of people; besides the other tourists, and locals there was an
endless eclectic collection of street performers, at least six weddings,
mostly with over the top Spanish influenced colorful gowns, the grooms
mostly were dressed head to toe in white, several groups of people
selling their version of religion, one that we recognized was the Hari
Krishna’s, a costume guild dressed in Victorian garb and having tea on
one of the lawns, the park is a kaleidoscope of entertainment.
We
discovered something of interest to us and all of you from Myrtle
Beach. In the center square of the park is a larger than life bronze
statue of a Spanish soldier on a horse. It was sculpted by Anna Hyatt
Huntington a noted artist from Myrtle Beach; Brookgreen Gardens south of
Myrtle Beach was created by her husband to showcase her many works of
art. Huntington Beach State Park is named for the Huntington’s.
Our
campground is about ten miles from the edge of the San Diego suburbs
and the interstate that leads directly into the city. Speed limit is
65mph and most people are going in excess of that. With the help of our
GPS Aimee (aim-me), maps, and our general sense of direction, we zipped
right along with the crowd and only got slightly disoriented once and
that was after we got off the interstate in the city. Tomorrow we are
going back to Balboa Park but only to park the jeep and start our city
tour on a hop-on hop-off trolley.
PS: Still haven’t seen the imagined stereotypical California girl, but we did see a blond haired surfer looking dude!
