I have looked forward to seeing the Pacific Ocean from California Ocean
Highway every since we left Myrtle Beach May 7th or 5000 miles ago. In
the San Diego area, the Pacific was hard to see because of the real
estate that’s built on the hillsides overlooking the beachfronts. Since
all this real estate is of enormous value, the locals want to keep their
world private so landscaping is designed to keep sightseers away. We
were fortunate to find an overlook at a park in Lajolla, north of San
Diego where we saw seals laying on the rocky beach and got our first
real view of the Pacific. Unfortunately as we have learned from locals
“June is gloom” month in California, so the beach is misty and cold
which apparently made the seals happy from their contented noises.
Back to today’s Ocean Highway experience...
I
must compliment Larry and his ability to handle the motor home while
towing the Jeep. Needless to say, he is an excellent driver but today he
had to really show his dexterity in maneuvering the rig around the
hairpin curves engulfed in fog all the while going up steep grades.
Occasionally when possible, he would pull to the side to let unhappy
drivers who were trapped behind us pass. All the while I’m sitting in
the passenger seat thinking, “This is not fair” we’ve come this far and
can’t see the beautiful scenery I’ve heard so much about! Finally after
about twenty long foggy miles the sky opened and what a beautiful sight
was before us, blue water, huge boulders protruding out of the water
with waves splashing around and steep cliffs covered in flowers. Yes, it
was and is everything I wanted to see and more.
