Sturgis South Dakota, for a week every August the population goes
from a little over 6000 to several hundred thousand. Motorcycles
enthusiasts from every walk of life are drawn to Sturgis that week to
hang out with other motorcyclists. But Sturgis is a motorcycle town all
year, bikers come to “ride the hills” meaning riding to towns, or
national monuments in the Black Hills surrounding Sturgis.
No,
we didn’t buy a Harley, in fact I don’t think you can buy one here in
Sturgis We stopped at Sturgis Harley Davidson and all they sell is
clothes and Harley branded stuff. They had one motorcycle in the store
and it was just a display prop, I think you have to go to Spearfish or
Rapid City to see real motorcycles for sale.
My friend Larry
Simon stopped by and told us after we go to Sturgis to ride out to
Deadwood and Lead. Deadwood is an old town imortalized by Hollywood
westerns in the 50’s and 60’s. It is probably most famious for being the
place Wild Bill Hickock was killed. Today it is a thriving tourist
town. They have retained the old west town feel to Main Street, but have
all the commercial offerings tourists expect, plus a casino in every
building.
Lead, pronounced Leed is just up the hill from deadwood
and is the home to the now closed Homestake gold mine. It produced more
gold than any other mine in the world. It has mine shafts 8000 feet
deep in the ground. It is reinventing itself by offering the mines as
deep secure reseach space; several agencys or companys have or are
installing labs in the mines depths.
We have another busy day
planned for tomorrow, all the girls are getting their hair cut. We have
to have Dixie and Maggie to the groomer in Rapid City at 9am, and Millie
will go to Mastercuts at the mall. After that Millie and I are going to
Mount Rushmore and probably the Sitting Bull carving.
