Generator installation

May 12 2012

On Friday (5/11/12) we drove the relatively short 90 miles from lower Delaware to John and Sandy’s (John is my brother) house in Rock Hall, Maryland on Friday morning. I took a route thru the country to acquaint Millie with the Delmarva Peninsula, which BTW is basically flat country. It has the Delaware Bay and River to the east, the Chesapeake Bay to the west and farms and Chicken houses in the middle.

John and I were anxious to see how difficult the generator change out was going to be so we compared the old to the new, then took some measurements. It was such a close match we got started and had the new gen set installed by afternoon. Unfortunately it wouldn’t start; the fuel line from the tank is rotted and is sucking air. There are only about 2 inches of space between the fuel tank top where the line attaches and the underside of the floor, no room to work there. The fuel tank has approximately 70 gallons of gasoline in it; no way am I going to try to remove it, that’s a job for a heavy truck garage. We have a plan that may work; I’ve used my inspection camera to locate the fittings and we’ve marked the spot in the bedroom under the bed. Tomorrow we are going to cut a hole in the floor to access the fittings.

We couldn’t do the hose replacement as planned. We discovered there is a compartment containing the fresh water tank between the fuel tank and the bedroom floor. We came up with a temporary fix by using a 6 gallon outboard motor fuel tank. We don’t use the generator when driving, only if we park somewhere without hookups. We can get by setting the six gallon tank on the ground behind the RV when needed. Some time in the future I will take the motorhome to a truck repair shop and have them remove the tank and replace the lines.
