Port of Ilwaco

July 1 2012

As planned we went exploring again this morning. On our way to Astoria we discovered a neat little harbor on the mouth of the Columbia River. The Port of Ilwaco caters to commercial fishing fleets, charter boats and to a private fishing and pleasure boats. Along the bulkhead where the charter boats dock are several art galleries and restaurants, in addition to the normal boat related businesses. We were sitting at the dock when the charter boats came in, catch of the day was sturgen, all in the 3-4 foot range. All the catch was checked at the dock by inspectors, for size I guess. One of the boats was fishing for a different fish; I’m not sure what they were, sea bass maybe. Anyhow the inspectors scanned very one of their fish with a wand, I assume they were checking for fish with electronic tags.

The sun came out this afternoon and we enjoyed just sitting at the dock and watching all the activity. After a while we got back on the road and crossed the Columbia River to the town of Astoria. It is an ok town, not much tourist wise to see, but we did get the jeep washed and did some grocery shopping while in town.

Later we took the dogs to the beach again and let them run, followed by a drive of several miles on the sand.

Tomorrow we break camp and move about 250 miles north to a campground by the San Juan Islands.
