I have been told several times that you can’t really appreciate the
Grand Canyon until you see it with your own eyes. As Millie and I walked
the path to the rim of the canyon today I became a believer. Pictures
or video, while some of them are spectacular do not give you the sense
of awe that you get the first time you stand at the edge of that great
chasm.
Tomorrow we plan on hiking several miles of the rim to see
the canyon from several vantage points. There is a shuttle bus that runs
between the overlooks and we plan on hiking out and riding the bus
back. We’re not going to take the dogs; they’ll be in the motorhome
sleeping in the air conditioning.
Another point of interest today
was a stop at the 50,000 year old meteor crater in northern Arizona. It
is a mile across and 550 feet deep. It is a National Landmark, but
privately owned. It was a little pricy at $15 a head for seniors, never
the less it was pretty amazing to stand on the rim and see it.
BTW,
anyone planning on traveling to our National parks, if you’re 62 or
older, buy the senior access pass, it is good in all sorts of federal
parks. I saved $25 today entering the Grand Canyon Park, $15 yesterday
at the Petrified Forest, and I camp for $10 a night at federal parks or
Corp of Engineer parks with the Senior Access card. Cost of the Card is
$10 and it is good for life.
