Pierre, South Dakota

July 19 2012

A short distance east of our last night’s camp is the top of the Badlands National Park and we decided to start our day by driving through it. At the same exit of I-90 is the famous highway rest stop called Wall Drugs and we stopped there before entering the badlands. Originally a drug store, the owners started luring travelers from the highway by putting up signs offering free ice water. It is now a 76,000 square foot tourist attraction.

Leaving Wall the entrance to the badlands is just on the other side of I-90, you travel about a mile through natural grassland after passing the entrance gate. It’s pretty amazing how you’re driving over the rolling hills of grassland and pop over a hill top and are looking at moonscape for as far as you can see.

Exiting the park further east we got on I-90 and drove about a hundred miles or so before turning north to the state capital. The route north took us through a Grassland Preserve and at the top of one of the hills we could see almost nothing except the wild grasses for as far as you could see in all directions.
We are overnighting on a waterfront site in a state park just outside of town. Maggie played in the sand at the shoreline and had to have a shower afterwards. Dixie the more dignified lady just rested with me under a shade tree.
