Little Big Horn

July 15 2012

Sunday and we are still in Montana as we will be for most of our travels tomorrow. We started the day with a twenty mile scenic ride through a mountain pass. It was a natural deep cut in the mountain range, too steep and narrow for the interstate. The two lane road wound thru narrow rock outcroppings, and was accompanied by a river, running rapidly with snow melt. Around one bend we came upon a man in waders, standing midstream and casting his fly rod, it was like a picture from National Geographic.

Before we got into any serious driving on I-90 we stopped at a commercial flour mill that had a bakery on site. As you might imagine, you can’t get baked goods any fresher than that. The pastry buns that we bought were as big as a paper plate, and were mighty good tasting too.

In GarryOwen we secured our campsite for the night and then drove the jeep to the National Battlefield at Little big Horn. The history here is many faceted and complex. There are hundreds of books and DVD’s for sale in the visitors center and I’m sure as many versions of the events leading up to the battle, as well as accounts of the battle itself. I’m probably the least qualified historian among us and will keep my opinions to myself. However, I think it’s safe to say this place is held as hallowed ground because in the end 41 men make a stand against an overwhelming enemy force and fight to their deaths.
It’s very solemn and thoughtful to stand on such a battlefield, experience Little Big Horn yourself if you ever get the chance.
