Giant Sequoia's

June 16 2012

On Friday we spent a good portion of the morning planning, we started this trip with a very loose itinerary, we wanted to go where we wanted, when we wanted and not be tied to a rigid schedule. We’ve pretty much done that, adding things as we go and passing by things that were on a tentative visit list. With the 4th of July holiday coming up we decided to get reservations in advance for that week. In order to keep one of our big must see’s in Wisconsin later in July I wanted to be up near the Canadian border early in July.

The Canada by July 4th commitment made, we had to take a serious look at the calendar and map to come up with a plan for going thru the rest of California, all of Oregon, and most of Washington.

No, I’m not going to lay it out now; it’s always subject to change so you’ll just have to follow along as we travel.

In the afternoon, we went to Wal-Mart in nearby Santa Clarita and while there took a driving tour of the city. Home to about 100,000, it is a nice clean little place. Apparently it is somewhat affluent as we passed several exotic car dealers and nice neighborhoods. It had a trendy upscale feel to it, we liked it a lot and we rated it as someplace where it would be nice to live.

On Saturday morning we said goodbye to LA and drove to a campground in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We left the motorhome there and drove the jeep up the mountain to around 7000 feet in elevation. Our destination was the Trail of 1000 Giants in the Sequoia National Forest. The walking trail winds for a mile and a half thru an old growth forest of giant Ponderosa pine and Sequoia trees. It’s one of those places you have to see for yourself, my words cannot convey the magnificence of those behemoths.
